LOOKING AT "OTHER" INTERNET PROJECTS - GETTING IDEAS FOR OUR EURO-MATH-PROJECT!
Hans-Georg Weigand
Abstract: What are the leading ideas of the projects participating in our Innsbruck meeting.
Which ideas will be helpful for our planned EuroMath-project?
The following projects are participating in our EuroMath-project:
The Millennium Mathematics Project (http://mmp.maths.org) - containing:
- http://nrich.maths.org - monthly problem based learning
- http://plus.maths.org - mathematics interest articles for the general public.
- http://thesaurus.maths.org - an open source/open content multilingual thesaurus/dictionary of maths.
- http://motivate.maths.org - motivating children through videoconferencing with mathematics professionals.
- http://wims.unice.fr/wims/en_home.html - WWW Interactive Multipurpose Server, look at mathematical recreation
The WisWeb-Project (http://www.fi.uu.nl/wisweb/welcome_en.html)
The Mathematics Consortium (http://www.cpd4maths.co.uk/login.php)
and ???? (PLEASE COMPLETE)
There are already existing projects outside of EuroMath. What are the leading ideas of thes projects. What can we learn from these projects?
- LeActiveMath (http://www.leactivemath.org/)
- The Math-Forum (http://mathforum.org/)
- The Mathlet-Factory (http://www.mumie.net)
- The In2Math-Project (http://www.in2math.de/)
- Eric Weisstein's world of mathematics (http://mathworld.wolfram.com/)
- ExploreLearning (containing ExploreMath) - commercial webby winning site containing many high quality 'gizmos' - (http://www.explorelearning.com/)
- Wikipaedia - multilingual encyclopaedia with good mathematics section - (http://wikipedia.org).
- The MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive - (http://www-gap.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/)
- Planetmath - an open source/open content mathematics encyclopaedia in English. (http://planetmath.org)
- WebALT - http://www.webalt.net
and ???? (PLEASE COMPLETE)
We might have a debate about these projects and we think about how to transfer ideas from these projects to our EuroMath-project.

"I guess my contribution would be to use my consderable experience of teaching and teaching teachers with respect to secondary mathematics supported by technology to contribute to what the aims of the bid might be (option 3). This work has always involved me in thinking about the relationship between software design and learning and somy contribution could instead be to option 4." "
Alison Clark-Jeavons
"Our contribution to (3) would be based on our development of web-based materials for pupils aged 11-14 (Maths Alive!) and for teachers of this age of pupils (ESTUICT)."

Title: E-learning in preparing of mathematics teachers and in mathematics teaching
Abstract: E-learning belong to modern conception of education at present. Our research is focused on possibilities of exploitation of e-learning in education of mathematics teachers. Base of e-learning is the preparation and realization of educational courses with using of information technologies. The important place in this conception can take school information service. We prepared this service, which contains educational applications and electronic collection of tasks, which can be used in teaching at the secondary schools.
Didactics: current standards and desiderata, new conceptual approaches

"with my contribution of different kinds of Java applets"
Kati Munkacsy
Some Hungarian examples of using ICT in mathematics classrooms, PowerPoint presentation. Using CABRI together with worksheet on paper. Interactive applets of the learning the functions. IDI project of Dutch and Hungarian students The role of history of mathematics in the teaching of mathematics, websites and CD-ROM.

Mathematical software, tools, standards and cooperation with business partners
Mike Pearson
See http://mmp.maths.org for our contributions in the past (NRICH, PLUS, thesaurus, Motivate). I am currently interested in finding ways of overcoming the reluctance that many (most) teachers have in engaging creatively with internet based learning - i.e. not just provision of distance learning courses, but also peer to peer contributions to mathematical network communities. Ease of use issues, standards for web maths, building on existing successful communities in other fields are therefore relevant.
Adrian Oldknow
"Our contribution to (5) would also be based on the software choices made for these projects, and experience gained with commercial partners, as well as other ongoing publishing plans."
Ramon Eixarch - Maths for More
"Maths for More is a commercial company. We can contribute with a commercial point of view to the workshop. We have wide commercial experience in Spain."
